Yes or No on ASI Book-to-Screen PitchFest?

Christian Book Idea The headline reads: Author Solutions, Inc. Hosting Inaugural Book-to-Screen PitchFest July 22-23…Los Angeles

The advertised opportunity: “This is a fantastic opportunity for indie authors to gain rare access with key figures who make decisions about what is seen on the silver screen and television,” said Keith Ogorek, ASI senior vice president of marketing. “Every project begins as a pitch and this is a great first step for this group of authors to work toward realizing the dream of breaking into the entertainment industry.”

Eligibility: The Book-to Screen PitchFest is available exclusively to just the first 150 authors published through ASI and ASI partnership imprints, (including CrossBooks and WestBow).

The Event

Part 1: Morning workshop on how to pitch your book effectively, including “practice.”

Part 2: Attendees pitch to Hollywood company representatives in a “speed dating” setting. Each will have two minutes (my underline) per company to make a lasting impression.

Part 3: Closing Session on preparing your next story.

Here are Jim’s thoughts on the opportunity:

1) Don’t get starry-eyed at the opportunity.

Don’t let the prospect of a movie deal get in the way of rational thinking. This is an opportunity for very few books.

2) Would your book make a GREAT movie? Why?

Be very honest with yourself here. Is your book suitable for the big screen/cinematic? If you cannot answer this question with a resounding “YES!” (without a shadow of a doubt), this would be a great way to waste a lot of money.

Think of all the top selling, GREAT Christian novels and other books that never became movies. There are thousands. It has nothing to do with how well the author (or agent) pitched the book to “Hollywood.”

Do you need a professional opinion on this? The Christian Self-Publishing Association would be pleased to advise you whether or not your book is pitchworthy for a movie project, as part of our Award of Excellence Review for self-published Christian books. (With this service, you’ll get a comprehensive written review for your book.  If your book is chosen as an award winner, you will gain a number of extra promotional opportunities for your book.) Click here for more information: Award of Excellence Review.

This will save you at least $1,300, because…

3) Count the cost.

In looking at the Author Solutions site, the low price for this event is $1,499. If you choose the video option, the cost doubles to $2,999. (They will shoot a promo video for your book the day after the PitchFest). Add to this hotel, airfare and food and you are talking about roughly $2,800 – $4,200.

Is this the BEST use of your marketing dollars? Be very honest with yourself on this question. I can think of a lot of ground one could cover through a book video trailer and social media marketing campaign for your book…while spending less than even $1,499.
