Self-Published Author Sells 900,000 E-Books

Amanda-hocking-kindle-author “Unknown, living paycheck to paycheck in Austin, Minnesota, rejected by publishers all over New York, Amanda Hocking decided to self-publish on ebook platforms only. She sold 100,000 of her works in December, and over 10 months she’s had more than 900,000 in sales. She’s 26 and is now making enough money to quit her day job and become a full time writer, in fact she’s a millionaire.

Read her success story: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/01/self-published-author-amada-hocking_n_829906.html

“Through social media promotion and absolutely no overhead, Hocking has hawked thousands of copies of her Twilight-esque teen fiction.

According to the article and Amazon’s generous royalty payout scale, she’s pulling in 70 percent of the profits on her work after shelling out 30 percent to Amazon. According to Insider, the 100,000 copies she sells a month go for $0.99 to $3, so she could pull down millions a year just by cutting out agents, publishers and old-fashioned wood pulp.” See the rest of this article here: http://www.boiseweekly.com/Cobweb/archives/2011/03/02/kindle-based-author-amanda-hocking-possibly-banking-millions

Just a little note from Jim:

I almost feel like putting that wonderful disclaimer here: “These results are not typical…” But I will risk posting this story simply to let you know that the day of indie publishing and self-publishing has arrived. (As well as the day of the e-book.)

Five things not to miss here:

1) Amanda’s book is written in the genre of the outrageously popular Twilight series (written to a proven market).

2) She is a very experienced writer/ blogger. She is passionate about writing.

3) Although the book is written well, some say it is not a “great” book. Some say it is the fact that so few books in that genre are available in the Kindle format, that she is doing well as a result.

4) This is not an endorsement of Amazon/ Createspace or Kindle.

I strongly believe Christian authors are best served by Christian self-publishing service providers: Xulon, Winepress, WestBow, CrossBooks, and so on. Most, if not all of these providers, offer Kindle e-book format. (Though we will be looking at retail prices and royalties rates soon to see how they compare.)
