QR Codes: Creative Way to Bring Multimedia to Your Book and Marketing

A QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response code) is a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code) first designed for the automotive industry.  Though created in 1994 by Toyota subsidiary Denso Wave to track vehicles during the manufacturing process, the QR code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. (Source: Wikipedia) Look closely at the packaging of many things you buy and you will see QR codes.

Innovative authors are now using QR codes in paperback books and e-books to give readers a multimedia experience, with the help of ChristianWriterHelp.com. Readers come upon QR codes in these books, scan them using a free app on their smartphone, and within seconds, view online content: video, web page, audio recording and more! Download a free QR reader app to your smartphone and test it on the QR code at left.

How can you use QR codes to add value to your work and to make it a multimedia experience for your readers? Here are just a few ideas…

  • In his latest book, Rehab, (to be released January 2012), popular author Josh Mayo uses QR codes throughout the work, allowing readers to view dramatic vignettes, sermon portions, illustrations and more.
  • In her book, Standing with the Dog, (working title, to be released the first quarter of 2012), dog training and care expert, Mel Helmick will use QR codes throughout her work to illustrate dog training techniques with online video!

Consider these ideas for QR codes:

  • To show places and locations you describe in your work, whether it be your childhood home, Jerusalem, New York City–wherever!
  • To illustrate how to do anything.  Now you can provide not just instructions for readers, but tutorial videos as well!

If you have a video trailer for your book, consider:

  • Adding a QR code to your book’s business card.  Give recipients more than a card to promote your book–give them a slick video trailer as well!
  • Adding a QR code to posters advertising your book signing. Invite poster readers to scan the QR code to see a “personal message” (invitation) from you, or to scan a QR code to view your book’s video trailer (or both!).
  • Adding a QR code to handbills and church bulletin inserts for your book, inviting recipients to scan a QR code to see a “special video.”

And here is some great news: generating QR codes is easy to do…and FREE!

We would be glad to advise you how to use QR codes to enhance your book or its marketing.
