Indie Christian Authors Grade Self-Publishers

Woman with laptop 5984141_XS Indie Christian authors have “spoken,” and graded their chosen self-publishing services providers, including: Xulon Press, Tate Publishing, Westbow, Crossbooks, Createspace, and Lulu. Everything in this post and in our Publisher Comparison Chart is based on our 20-Second Survey, completed by indie Christian authors who graciously took a little time to help us help you. (If you are an indie author, I hope you will take time to complete a  survey as well. A link is provided at the end of this post.)

In reviewing the survey results, I found that all the self-publishing services providers have the opportunity to improve. I note this because  most of the comments tended to be negative

(though not all). I’ve included some representative comments below. Hopefully, these comments and the grades in our Publisher Comparison Chart will help you to make a more informed choice of your self-publishing services provider.

Here are some of the comments authors added to their surveys (not copyedited, but some shortened):

Westbow (A)

“…all the information is very clear and no hidden ‘exceptions.'”

“Excellent customer services and very professional as well as personable.”

Createspace (B+)

“CreateSpace is great if you plan to market yourself, or you just want your book in print for less than $100. You have complete control over how your book looks (inside and out) so be prepared to do some work. In the end, you get to purchase copies for half of the retail price, and your book appears on Amazon and Books-A-Million’s websites.”

Lulu (B+)

Xulon Press (B-)

“I am newly published and so far they have been amazing.”

“They were easy to work with at first, however, lately their author service has become very poor. The reps are hard to get a hold of and emails they send come from a generic address so replying is impossible.”

Tate Publishing  (C)

“The ‘editor’ admitted not reading my entire book.”

“The design was insisted upon and there was a remarkedly evident error on the cover.”

“They do no marketing other than ‘teach’ authors to ‘have signings.'”

Crossbooks (C)

“They are extremely slow on producing the e-book version of the book. Their social media marketing package was way overpriced.”

“The web site could not take anyone to the checkout in order to purchase my book. I ran an ad campaign and it showed 3.5 million times, and I got around 30,000 clicks onto my page, only to find out that the web site could not take them to the check out. They have corrected only part of this. I still cannot get through to the check out from my own computer.”

“I had a friend tell me that they tried to order at a Barnes and Noble and they told her it was out of print.”

“I have had 5 different Sales Consultants in the past years(?) and they usually call one time and then never return my emails. Most of the people that I worked with that were really good at their job are now gone.”

“The process was great until the book was done. Then it seems they are done with the Author. I have been very disappointed in CrossBooks. They need some major improvement on the end of the process.”

“Lifeway owns them and some of their stores won’t even order the book for their customers. It does not seem to support their own publishing group.”

We will keep an eye on this to see which companies take steps to better serve their authors.

Blessings, Jim
