How I Saved an Author $5,300!

Last week, I saved a self-publishing author $5,300.  This client was referred to me after she received a self-publishing proposal from a company that left her in shock.  In the proposal, the company offered her several publishing “package” options, the cheapest of which was $6,800!

After being part of the publishing biz for over 20 years now, I have a knack for sniffing out a bad publishing deal, and this one was stinky!

The company played up the fact that they were part of a major publishing company and that the author had a chance at getting a mainline contract, since all their self-published books were reviewed by their mainline publishing division acquisitions editors. They made much of their promise to rep her book to stores and buyers for chains, list it in various places, make sure it showed up on their website and appear in a “catalog” ad in a magazine. This all sounded “good” on paper, to the untrained eye, but I knew that what they were offering held little to no value for her beyond making her book available for sale.

On the pro side, she would get 100 paperback books, copyediting, and an e-book version of her book in all the key formats, as well as a press release (though they were murky about where they would send that release). But $6,800? (The package did not even include a book video trailer!)

As is often the case with such companies, they also required her to sign a contract with them.  That contract would secure permission for them to get a portion of her royalties and profits from every book she sold.

Bottom line: I knew that what they offered would not gain quality exposure for her book and had a low probability of gaining sales for her.

In short, I was able to offer her a $1,500 proposal that included copyediting, professional cover copy, a cover design (by an award-winning designer who has designed hundreds of covers), typesetting (by an expert who has typset over 5,000 manuscripts) and everything else they offered (except the worthless “prestige” marketing they hyped). She will publish the paperback book directly with Lightning Source ($105 fee included), and get an e-book for free.

My proposal was $5,300 less than what they were offering. I will help her become her own publisher.  As such, she will get 100% of the royalties and 100% of the profits from her book’s sales!  (In my last post, “Self-Publish Your Book for FREE!” I show how this could be a $3,036 chunk in a single year!  Click here to read it. )

With me, she also has a choice.

She can CHOOSE to print 1 or 100 books, at cost, from LSI (approximately $300 for 100). This is NOT required for her to use our services. (We make nothing on these books…as opposed to the other company.)

She can CHOOSE to purchase a book marketing program from us for $699, but it is NOT required for her to use our services. Our program includes a book video trailer and our Social Media Book Marketing Program (which includes a designed WordPress blog, Facebook fan page with Welcome/landing page, Twitter account with custom background, LinkedIn account and account creation for 15 other social media sites–and my guide on how to use all of them).

I would love to put together a custom publishing services program for you! Request one by leaving us a message here: Click here to request a custom publishing services consult!
