Amazon Pricing: Why is my book so cheap on Amazon?

https://www.christianwriterhelp.com/service/publishing-packages/Q: My book has a $15.99 retail, but Amazon is selling it for $9.99. How do I keep them from pricing my book so low?

A: Retailers (Amazon and other booksellers), whether brick-and-mortar or online, typically buy books from distributors* at a wholesale discount of 55%. This means retailers purchase your $15.99 book from Ingram/ Spring Arbor (distributor for LSI books) for roughly $7.19 a copy.

As a purchaser of your book, the retailer reserves the right to sell it for as low a price as they want. Bottom line, if Amazon wants to make only $2.80 profit on your book, selling it at $9.99, it is their prerogative. (Occasionally, I have seen Amazon price books so low, they make only a 25-cent profit.) There is no recourse for the author to get any retailer to raise its prices.

Q: What impact does this have on my royalties?

A: The price retailers set for your book has no impact on your royalties. Your royalties are calculated on what the retailer paid for your book (the wholesale discount price). Given the example above (and assuming we helped you publish your book directly with LSI and that you did not publish through Xulon, Westbow, Author Solutions and others that get a share of your royalties), if the retailer buys your $15.99 book for 55% wholesale discount, $7.19, your royalties are calculated as follows: $7.19 – LSI print price = your royalties. If your book is 160 pages, the print price would be approximately $2.98, so your royalties would be calculated as follows: $7.19 – $2.98 = $4.21 author royalties.

* Ingram/ Spring Arbor distributes all titles published through ChristianWriterHelp.com, via Lightning Source (LSI).

https://www.christianwriterhelp.com/service/publishing-packages/Publish your book through ChristianWriterHelp.com, and you will make 100% royalties and 100% of the profit on all copies of your book you buy (at cost to print) and resell.
